Frogs Kids Facts

The world is full of diverse forms of animals. For the sole purpose of study, human beings have divided the entire animal kingdom into two broad categories; vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates are those animals that possess a vertebral column, also known as backbone. This category is further subdivided into 5 groups namely; mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians.

Frog is an amphibian, which means a class of animals that have the ability to survive in both, water and land. The body features of frogs include longer hind legs, webbed feet, protruding eyes and sticky long tongue. The baby frog called tadpole shows presence of gills and a tail, both characteristics that assist its survival in water. However, on maturity the frog develops lungs and the tail gradually disappears. The skin of frogs could be either smooth or warty and possess the capability to absorb water, a condition due to which frogs do not require to drink water. This feature is used by desert frogs to absorb and store water during rainfall and thereafter survive without water for about 2 years at a stretch. Diet of frogs includes arthropods, annelids and gastropods.

The size of frogs can vary from 10 to 300 millimeters. Frogs are known to be prevalent in all parts of the world except for Antarctica. There are about 6 to 14 species of frogs that are devoid of tongues. This amphibian has the potential to make huge leaps. In fact, competitions involving frog jumping is a form of recreation in the US. The Goliath frog, known to be the largest and best high-jumper frog has a record of leaping 3 meters into the air. The longest lifespan of a frog ever known is 40 years.
