Spiders are found everywhere, outdoors and indoors. It is impossible to predict when and where a person may end up getting bitten by them. However, at sometime you may have to encounter a spider bite and it is best to know how to treat them. Some spiders are poisonous and some are harmless. However, you can only tell from the symptoms and if you were bitten by a spider, then go to the nearest medical facility.
There are some kinds of spiders, like the brown recluse, and black widow, which are particularly dangerous. If the bite is from these species you have to see the doctor right away. If the bite is from a non venomous spider, you can treat it at home.
Normally, a spider bite seems like a bee sting. It causes itchiness, redness and a swelling at the site. It will also hurt for some time. To treat such spider bites, wash the bitten area using water and soap. Wipe it off and put an ice pack immediately on the wound. If it is hurting a lot, take a pain killer which is available over the counter. If you have allergic reactions use antihistamines to bring down the symptoms. In case of small children, always get prompt medical attention.

Before you start any home remedy, identify the type of spider that has bitten you. This will help you determine if you need anti-venom. That is the right procedure to treat poisonous spider bite.
Clean the area of bite thoroughly with clean water and soap. The wound has to be disinfected before anything else has to be applied. Apply a cold pack over the bite of the spider. You can also take pain killers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Also monitor your condition and see if you are developing a fever or allergic reactions. If the symptoms are getting worse, do not be afraid to seek medical attention immediately.
If the spider is a poisonous one, then venom would have entered the body. To prevent the venom from spreading, tie a bandage tightly around the area of the bite. The bandage should be tight enough to control the blood circulation and not cut it off completely. The area of bite should be kept in an elevated position for some time. Apply ice pack on the wound even if it is has been bandaged.
Make a paste by mixing 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon bleach and 1 teaspoon water. Apply it directly on the wound. This is very effective in treating small spider bites at home.
