Types Of Wild Rats

The genus Rattus comprises of 56 species of rats that come in varying colors and sizes. While these 56 species are designated as true rats, there are numerous other varieties such as the naked mole rat, bandicoot rat and pack ratthat are also categorized under the broad assembly of rats.


In general, this rodent can be encountered in almost every part of the world. However, there are certain species that are only found in specific areas of the world. Falling under this head are rats such as Mentawi, Nillu, Bonthain, and Dusky Field Rats, that have been named after their places of origin. There are extreme opinions related to this mammal. While some keep rats as pets and find the animal quite amicable and faithful; there are others who find its name synonymous with dirtiness. Studies highlight this animal to be high on IQ and sensitivity.

The most common species of rats are the brown and black rats. The brown rats are known by various names, such the Norwegian, common or wharf rats. Found commonly in most parts of the world, this mammal forms a good option for a pet and is immensely used as a medium of scientific experimentation. This species is well known for its trait of being extremely energetic.

The black rats are disliked more by the human race in comparison to its brown counterpart. These animals are known to transmit the life threatening epidemic, plague. This species is called the roof rat, ship's rat or house rats. Some of these names have been coined keeping the attributes of this rat in mind. The black rats travel distances on the face of the earth by stowing on boats. They are good at climbing, are quite shrewd and have the knack of hiding in the minutest of places.
