Each and every organism is born on this planet with certain food preferences. Such as the cow likes to eat grass, while the lion prefers flesh. Mostly, animals stick to their food options. Although originally an herbivore with just a few exceptional omnivorous varieties, today mice are seen gorging on just about anything in sight. In fact, mice are known to consume garbage and human disposal as well. Wild mice feed on the prevalent vegetation that includes fallen fruits, seeds, tree bark, bulbs, roots, oats, corn, potatoes and black beans. During the winters when the snow slackens the vegetative growth, they simply dig through the snow cover to consume the underlying grass or sprouts. Mice living near farms feed on the crop being cultivated in the area such as wheat and corn.

There is prevalence of certain omnivorous species in mice as well such as the white-foot species. Such types of mice feed on insects and meat scraps. There are some varieties of the animal that are purely flesh eating. These carnivorous breeds have the knack to catch their own prey in the form of grasshoppers, small insects and mammals or other rodents. When kept as pets, commercial pellets or clean seeds form the best option of food for these rodents. The feed can be further supplemented with fresh vegetables that not only take care of the uptake of essential nutrients but also prevent dehydration. However, food items such as avocado, mustard seeds, candy, coffee beans and chocolate should be strictly avoided as they can result in fatal consequences.
