Who does not love gerbils with long tails and furry ball-like bodies? Although they are natives of Asia and Africa, they are found all over the world in pet shops. These little fur balls are available in eight different species and weigh between one and seven pounds. They grow between three and seven inches long and have a tail length of 3 inches to 9 inches.


Usually the life span of gerbil is around one year to five years. However, in the wild gerbils live for around 4 years. A female gerbil's gestation period is three weeks and thereafter she gives birth to one to eight baby gerbils. Usually in a cage you will see gerbils standing on their hind legs, but when they walk, they always walk on all their four feet.

If you are keeping a gerbil as a pet, then the good news is that you need to feed it every one to two weeks. Gerbils love to eat seeds, roots, insects, flowers and leaves. However, in captivity you can feed them readymade gerbil food, lettuce, carrots and banana peels.

In a pet store, depending on the species you are purchasing, you will be spending anywhere from five dollars to ten dollars to purchase a gerbil. Although they are not expensive to purchase, they need to be well looked after if you want your gerbil to have a healthy and long life.
