Giant squids are scientifically known as Architeuthis dux. These are found in the Northern Atlantic, Northern Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Sea of Japan, Southern Ocean and Bering Sea. Their presence is alsoconfirmed is California and Hawaii. These squids are the largest invertebrates’ found on earth. They weigh approximately 900 kg and measures 60 Feet in length. The giant squids have eyes which are sized like basketballs. This feature is similar to that found in the other species like colossal squid. The approximate diameter of the squid’s eye is about 25 centimeters. These big eyes enable the squid to look for food in the depths of the ocean.

The giant squids like the other species of squids have eight arms and one pair of tentacles. All these organs assist the giant squid in hunting for food. Their mouth is similar to the beak of the parrot.

The giant squid feeds on marine life forms like shrimps, smaller sized shrimps and small fishes. Some of the marine biologists state that giant squids may also consume small sized whales.

The fins of the giant squid assist them in swimming and maneuvering. These squids also utilize the funnel in their body to draw water in to their mantle and release the same by forcing it out. This is the process termed as propulsion, which assists in their movement in water.

The giant squids inhabit the deepest waters in the ocean called epipelagic and mesopelagic zones and live in groups called school.

The life expectancy of these marine life forms is extremely short, the maximum being three years. They grow rapidly from their infant to adult size. They usually die at the end of spawning. The female species of giant squids are larger in size as compared to the males. In the males, the reproductive system matures completely even if the squid remains small in its size. The males inject the sperms in to the ventral arms of the female squids. These sperms utilized to fertilize eggs during spawning.

One of the largest specimens of squids ever found was in 1880 in New Zealand. In the marine world, there is only one known enemy of squids - the sperm whale. The facts about these life forms are limited which is attributed to their habitats being in deep ocean beds which is difficult to access. Most facts regarding squids were understood by analyzing their carcasses which got washed to the shores. The first live form of the giant squid was photographed in 2004 in Japan.
