How To Get Rid Of Snails In The Garden ?

Snails can be a great nuisance for the garden. Too many snails can change the appearance of the garden in less than 15 days. Even if you kill a few of them, they are very persistent. They reproduce once in a month and multiply quickly. Snails can reproduce on their own, without the help of the opposite sex. This is known as asexual reproduction. The snail eggs are hard to identify and can be buried in the soil for years. However, there are a few things available to control the snails in the garden. For garden lovers, there is always a war between the snails and their garden.

Some of the methods to remove snails from your garden are as follows:

Growing strong smelling herbs like lemon balm, mint, parsley, wormwood, sage and basil keep the snails away. These plants are highly effective in keeping snails out of gardens. Harvest these herbs and use them as mulch under the plants that you wish to protect. Large trees do not get affected by them. You can also use powdered or dry ginger and sprinkle them around the plants. The snails will not stop onto the plants because ginger burns them. Even salt has the same effect, but too much salt is not advisable for a garden. Salt removes the water from plants.

Wood ashes used in the garden can prevent them. However, be careful when using this as it can affect the pH balance of the soil. You can use 1 gallon per yard of garden once in a year and not more than that. The ash must not be put directly on flowers and if you are growing vegetables like potatoes.

Copper used as a metal gives a shock to the snails. Try using copper wiring as fence; however you need to bring out all the snails before you put the fence around the garden. Copper also kills snails and can be used in aquariums where snails are multiplying at a prolific rate.

The skin of the snails is hard to reach and is not easy to access. They can even slide on a sharp razor blade because of the slime. The mucus is used by the snails to repair the damaged parts on their body. But, if they have a several cuts on their body, the mucus oozes out and they die of dehydration. Some people also place sharp objects here and there, where the snails are likely to get on to the plants.

Another organic way to get rid of snails is making use of diatomaceous earth. This works similar to razor blades and dehydrates and kills the snails.
