Snails are called asexual creatures and they reproduce in a different way compared to other creatures. They are considered hermaphrodites. That means a snail has both male and female sexual organs. They have both the reproductive systems in them. This applies to both land and marine snails. Some snails like freshwater species and some oceanic ones do not seem to have this attribute, like apple snails or periwinkles. These 2 kinds of snails depend on male and females for reproduction.
By the time the snail is 1 year old they can reproduce as they are sexually mature. The average lifespan of a snail is only about 5 to 7 years. The snails grow very fast because of their lifespan. A snail carries its reproductive organs on the sides of its body. It is also the top of the body and it is easy for them to mate and grow the smaller snails.
The snails have a faster mating pace and that is what allows them to bring the smaller snails so fast. The snail can carry hundred eggs in it at one time. Their mating ritual is long and can last up to 12 hours. The female lays the eggs and waits for the male to fertilize it. After the eggs are fertilized, they undergo the initial development process in the body of the snail itself. The snails then lay the eggs and keep them in a cool place for hatching. Land snails typically bury the eggs underneath dirt. Marine sails keep the eggs on a rock. The eggs will stay at the same place and will develop without much harm.
The snail egg takes 2 to 4 weeks to develop. Right after the eggs hatch, they look for protection which is a survival instinct. Their shells are still very weak to offer them any protection from predators. Their immediate job after hatching is to find sources of calcium. They eat other eggs or their own eggs for nutrients. The snails take a period of three weeks to completely form. During this period they stay in the nest that they built and throughout the transformation period you will see changes in color and it becomes white from blue which is the adult form.
Once the snails are fully developed, they separate from their parents and go on their own. They choose their own spots for survival. Snails have a capacity to grow into large families.
