Sharks are among the most amazing animals and also have the reputation of being fiercest than all other sea animals. Sharks are in the Chordata phylum and Vertebrata subphylum. They belong to the category of the cartilaginous fish. There are more than four hundred species of sharks that are known to exist across all the oceans on the planet.

Whale shark is known to be the largest one in the world, with a maximum length of nearly 59 feet. The smallest shark is named dwarf lantern shark and it is merely about 6 to 8 inches long.

• Sharks do not have roots for their teeth. Instead, they have substitutes arranged in queue and a fresh tooth can move in within 1 day as a replacement of the old one. Sharks have 5-15 rows of teeth, with most species of sharks having 5 rows on an average. Dermal denticle, instead of a scale, covers the skin of shark.
• Sharks possess a distinctive lateral canal filled with fluid along their sides to help them in making powerful water movements. This is helpful for shark to find prey and navigate at night-time or when water observance is poor.
• Sharks require persistent water stirring over their gills to obtain essential oxygen.
• Some of the sharks are oviparous, as they can lay eggs. Various others are viviparous and hence, capable of giving birth to young ones.
• Sharks can quickly adapt to new environments when looking for foodstuffs.
• Average life span of most shark species is more than 20 years.
• Sharks are also known for their socialization.
• Sharks normally exist in the waters from 7,000 feet-10,000 feet.
• Due to illegal killing, many shark species have become endangered and are on verge of extinction.
