What Is Being Done To Save The Chinese White Dolphin ?

Chinese white dolphin has been inhabiting the estuaries in China for years now. These estuaries are a part of the South China Sea. However, in the recent times their number has fallen dramatically. Once there used to be twenty different populations of these white dolphin, and now there are just five populations remaining. The biggest population today can be found in the Pearl River Estuary.

The Hong Kong Administration and provincial government of Guangdong have taken initiative to save these white dolphin from extinction. In addition, several other animal conversation organizations have also been actively involved in saving this species of dolphin.

So, what is being done to save the Chinese white dolphin? Read on to find out all the conservation methods being employed.

The WWF of Hong Kong has been actively involved with the authorities in Mainland China to help conserve and preserve this species of dolphin. Different proposals were floated to make dolphin habitats into marine parks and the development of these parks were monitored by the WWF. Furthermore, WWF is trying to teach the locals to use sustainable fishery practices, so that the food supply of the dolphins is not reduced or threatened.

As China is one of the biggest growing economies in the world, it goes without saying that a lot of infrastructure development is taking place all over the country, including around the living territories of the Chinese white dolphin. Hence, the WWF and other marine life conservation organizations are making efforts to ensure that these delicate habitats are protected while the development goes on. Seminars and workshops are being conducted to understand the threats that the Chinese white dolphins are facing and what course of action needs to be undertaken in order to protect these dolphins from the threats. These seminars and workshops hosted many experts from China as well as the international community who presented their thoughts and conservation techniques.

Even the Chinese government is now taking into consideration the importance of saving the Chinese white dolphin. In some areas, this dolphin is threatened by water pollution and unforgiving living conditions. The Chinese government believes that the number of the white dolphin has reduced significantly and that now there are less than hundred Chinese white dolphins surviving in the wild. And, if the government does not take immediate steps to save and protect them, these dolphins will become extinct in another decade or so. This has urged the Chinese government to take action and protect the dolphin from getting extinct.

While the Chinese scientists are doing their best to conserve the Chinese white dolphins, they are facing problems with outdated research information and funding. However, as people are learning about the need to protect marine life in China, more and more are actively participating to help in this cause. Also, the government has allocated nearly $2.9 million to set up natural reserves and semi-natural reserves. These reserves will be situated along the Yangtze River, and the funds will also be used to make the natural reserves for the Chinese white dolphin, set up research centers to collect vital data and information on these dolphins, and also build help posts in the southern part of China.

The government and nongovernmental organizations will have to work together if they want to protect and save the Chinese white dolphin. An important part of saving the Chinese white dolphin is educating and making people aware about the importance of these cetaceans in the ecosystem. Without this knowledge no amount of conservation will help protect these creatures. Once people are made aware, it will help in sustaining a harmonized ecosystem, as people will go out of their way to preserve all forms of wildlife and not just the Chinese white dolphins.
