Dolphins have been regarded as friendly towards humans. These have been brought out in stories and movies as well. This could be a reason for the mushrooming of aquariums having shows of dolphin stunts since these mammals are easily trainable and friendly. These marine parks try to educate people about the dolphins, their feeding habits and also why they must be protected.
In most places, people feed fishes in ponds or aquariums either as a part of tradition or for the fun. Puffed rice or fish feed is usually recommended. What about dolphins then? It would be wiser to know exactly what to feed them instead of feeling disheartened if the dolphin does not eat what has been offered. One should bear in mind that similar to most other animals or birds which can be found in the wild as well as a pet, dolphins too can be found in the wild waters at sea or rivers and in aquariums as well.
These mammals live in groups called pods, and prefer remaining so especially during hunting or while feeding on the prey. They can survive alone but living in a group comes naturally to them. A trait of the dolphin on spotting a prey is to slap their tail against the water in order to get hold of it. Another trait is their ability to generate sonic pulses when they are around small fishes. These pulses stun the fish temporarily which make hunting easier for the dolphins. This has been adapted by man as well and in many places. The fishermen use devices for pulse generation to get a big sized catch of fishes.
For normal dolphins in the waters at sea or in rivers, there are slight variations in the food that they feed on as compared to the pets in aquariums. As a general rule though, both these varieties are understood to feed on different types of fish. The wild dolphins also savor on other forms of food like crustaceans, cephalopods and planktons which are also found in sea waters.
They feed on various species of fish like mackerel, herring and cod. Some species of dolphins also feed on squids. One specific species of the dolphin, which is the killer whale, feeds not just on fish, but other marine life forms as well, such as sea lions, seals and sea turtles. The bottlenose dolphins also savor mullets apart from fishes. The black dolphins consume small fishes as a part of their routine diet.
