What Do Giraffes Eat ?

The giraffe is usually around 4.3 meters to 5.2 meters long and weighs over 2000 pounds. So obviously, an animal of such dimensions would need a lot of feeding. And giraffe is no exception. This large animal is essentially an herbivorous animal. This is mainly due to its exceptional height. Experts believe that this is because most animals are not being even close to the base of a giraffe’s neck. So, the animal has restricted or no access to other animals. Also in plants and trees, they have to feed themselves on such ones which are at par with their height. But since they can stoop down to eat grass; many do not believe this theory.

Giraffes love eating twigs of trees like Acacia, Terminalia and Commiphora. They also feed on grass, as mentioned earlier, as well as various fruits. Their tongue, palate and lips being strong, they face no problems breaking and tearing off branches and twigs with sharp thorns. Given the size of the animals, giraffes are voracious eaters. In fact, they can consume 65 pounds, which is 29 kg of twigs and leaves daily, along with about a 100 gallons of water to wash it all off. However, if the situation demands, they can even live off only 15 pounds (6.8 kg) of food too.

There are several species of Acacia but usually giraffes love to eat all types. However, the giraffes of Southern Africa are known to have a special liking for Acacia erioloba.
