This is the reason why it is necessary to ensure that your donkey eats quality grass and some hay. In case good quality grass is not available, then your donkey can eat other things. Donkeys can also eat carrots, vegetable scraps, and at times cookies without filling. When feeding the donkey vegetable scraps, make sure that you do not give it green potatoes, as they are not good for your donkey's health. In addition, the donkey can also eat hay or chaff. However, if you donkey is old and having dental problems, it may not like chaff. The same is also true for donkeys that are nursing or recovering after a bout of illness.

Donkeys can also eat organic freeze dried grass, pre-made pellets that have all the vital nutrients and mixture of oats, oat bran and corn. When feeding the former, make sure that give the donkey just a handful eat day, and avoid feeding your donkey just oats as it will be too rich for the donkey to digest.
