Doves belong to the Columbidae family, and are considered as the universal symbol of peace.
About 300 species of dove exist around the world out of which 9 different species are found in the US.

• Mourning Doves as well as Rock Pigeons are found in large numbers in the US. The rest of the dove species are mostly distributed in the southern parts of the US.
• Turtle Doves are not native to the US. The Ringed Turtle-Dove has been domesticated in some of the wild parts of the southeastern countries. These doves have become famous worldwide as their name has been used in popular Christmas songs.
• White doves are birds that fly a lot and also have the capability of returning back to their abode even if they travel far away. Hence, they are a common sight at weddings as they return back to their place once they are set free after the event.
• Diamond doves are native of Australia and have blue gray feathers and gray body. Adults have irises of orange color. These birds need a lot of free space to move around and hence, if they are encaged, the cage should be big enough for them to fly inside. These doves do not have the ability to return back to their home like the white doves and hence, you should not set them free in case you do not want to lose them.
• Ring-necked doves are gentle by nature and the cheaper version of white doves in case you want to keep them as pets.
