The world is full of birds of varying sizes. Some are small, while others are medium sized. And, there are some who are classified as being large. Out of all the large birds, the biggest bird in the world is the ostrich.
This is a bird that cannot fly and is around three meters tall. It weighs around hundred and sixty kilos. The bird is found in Africa, but nowadays there are many farms all over the world that are rearing ostriches for commercial purposes.
Besides being the biggest bird, the ostrich also has the distinction of laying the largest egg. An egg of an ostrich weighs around 1.4 pounds, and the lifespan of an ostrich can be up to seventy years.
In the 1800s, ostriches were much sought after for their skin and feathers. This prompted poachers and hunters to hunt them merciless, and their number dwindled alarming that people thought they had become extinct. In addition, many parts of the world consumed the meat of the bird as it was claimed that it tasted similar to beef.
Today, the ostrich is farmed commercially for its skin, feathers and meat. In certain countries, ostriches are used for racing just like horseback riding. However, this is not so prevalent and wide spread because ostriches are not the friendliest of creatures in the world.
Another way to look at biggest bird is by taking wingspan or weight into consideration. When it comes to wingspan, the Wandering Albatross is the biggest bird as it has a span of five meters from one end to the other. The Wandering Albatross is found predominantly in Australia and New Zealand when it decides to come to land to mate or take a break from flying. When it comes to weight, the biggest bird is the Great Bustard, which weighs an average of twelve kilograms. This bird is found in Europe and warmer locales of Asia.
