How Many Grizzly Bears Are There ?

Everyone knows what a grizzly bear looks like and one of the first things that comes to their mind is the huge size of the bear. The grizzly bears can be easily distinguished from the black bears because of the hump on their back. They have extremely strong shoulders, jaws and paws. The claws of the grizzly bear alone are as long as human fingers.

These cute looking animals are actually very fierce and they are wild. They have a short temper and can attack for no specific reason. The grizzly bear is not known for chasing but they can run after their prey for a long time if they make up their mind. They mostly wander about the forest feeding on grass, berries, and fish, carrion and small mammals. Grizzly bear can also be very playful and sometimes their intention is simply not to kill their prey. They just chase them around and play with them.

There are nearly 50,000 grizzly bears in North America in the early beginnings. Today, unfortunately, there are less than two thousand of them left. In Alaska, there could be more than thirty thousand grizzly bears. One of the main reasons for the decline in the number of grizzly bears is the widespread killing. However, since most of Alaska is an unoccupied territory the bears were rather safe. Also, the changing climate can be one of the reasons for their dwindling numbers. However, there is plenty of chance left to save the grizzly bears of North America and that is by conserving their habitat.
